PHOENIX – Ketel Marte’s return to the Diamondbacks on Monday and reunion with the team should not simply be viewed as another star coming off the injured list; it is a major test of his leadership.

Marte’s absence in Boston created a situation bigger than one missed game. He did not show up at Fenway Park for Arizona’s series opener against the Red Sox, leaving teammates and coaches searching for answers. The organization later learned Marte was dealing with a personal matter and left-knee issues, which ultimately resulted in an MRI showing inflammation. Now comes the difficult part of facing the clubhouse. Marte acknowledged on Monday’s media session before the game that he had not yet addressed his teammates and said he was ready to stand in front of them “like a man.” That moment could define what happens next.

After a two week absence from the D-backs, Ketel Marte [through a translator] says he will face his teammates today like a man, and that he is human, and hopes they’ll understand that we all make mistakes.

Because accountability is not about pretending the situation never happened. It is about owning your part in it. The Diamondbacks still need Marte. The offensive value he brings, particularly with Arizona battling for a postseason position, is irreplaceable, but production cannot automatically repair damaged trust. Marte has spent years establishing himself as one of Arizona’s most important players. Now he has to show that leadership means being willing to have uncomfortable conversations, listen to teammates and accept responsibility when things go wrong.

What he does after walking through that clubhouse door could determine whether this becomes a forgotten chapter or a lasting fracture. For Arizona, the hope is simple: Let Marte’s return begin with accountability, and let his play finish the healing.
