GLENDALE – The Arizona Cardinals entered the offseason expecting a quarterback competition. What they did not expect was another intriguing name suddenly becoming available. Brendan Sorsby’s decision to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft has created one of the most fascinating quarterback questions in football. For Arizona, the timing could not be more complicated.

The Cardinals already find themselves navigating uncertainty. Veteran Jacoby Brissett is reportedly seeking a larger financial commitment, third-round rookie draft pick Carson Beck represents a developmental investment, and Gardner Minshew was signed to provide experience and stability. Adding Sorsby would transform an already crowded room into one of the league’s most competitive quarterback battles.

From a pure football perspective, the argument is compelling. Sorsby possesses the physical profile teams covet at 6-foot-3 and 235 pounds. His production at Cincinnati was equally impressive, throwing for 2,800 yards with 27 touchdowns against just five interceptions while leading the Big 12 in passer rating. Many evaluators viewed him as a future first-round talent before his eligibility issues emerged. That kind of upside is rarely available outside the traditional draft process.

Yet football talent is only part of the equation. The Cardinals are attempting to establish a new culture under Mike LaFleur. Bringing in a player whose college career ended amid gambling violations creates unavoidable questions. Fair or unfair, every interception, every poor decision, and every difficult stretch would invite scrutiny. The distraction factor alone cannot be ignored.

There is also a strategic question. Arizona already invested draft capital in Beck. If the organization truly believes he can become a franchise quarterback, introducing another highly regarded young passer could slow development rather than accelerate it.
If Sorsby were entering a stable quarterback situation, the gamble might be worth considering. For Arizona, however, the organization already has multiple developmental paths in place. The potential reward is significant, but the risk of creating uncertainty where clarity is needed feels even greater. Sometimes the smartest move is passing on talent to protect a plan. The Cardinals may be at that crossroads now.
