After moving on from Kyler Murray, the Arizona Cardinals were rumored to be chasing upside as names like Malik Willis floated through offseason speculation, followed by whispers of veteran stability with Jimmy Garoppolo. Instead, Arizona landed on signing Gardner Minshew to a one-year worth $5.75 million per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, coming in as a backup to now starting QB, Jacoby Brissett.

This move is more than underwhelming. The mustache, the charisma, the journeyman résumé, Minshew has built a career as a capable spot starter, although not a franchise reset button. But the Cardinals’ real message may be simpler: this season isn’t about the quarterback who starts Week 1. It’s about the quarterback they draft next. Pairing Minshew with veteran Jacoby Brissett creates the NFL’s most obvious bridge quarterback room. Both players are respected in locker rooms, capable of managing games, and unlikely to push a rebuilding roster into accidental playoff contention.

For Cardinals fans, the emotional tension is real. Ownership has long emphasized selling tickets and competing annually, yet the optics of this move suggest little to no urgency. Rebuilds rarely sell jerseys in September, but they can define franchises for a decade. That’s the gamble. The Cardinals aren’t chasing relevance in 2026; they’re chasing control of the 2027 draft board.
