What Cardinals TE Tip Reiman’s absence mean vs. Panthers in Week 2

GLENDALE – The Arizona Cardinals will be without backup tight end Tip Reiman for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers, which could lead to a massive shift in the team’s offense. No other quarterback in the league targets their tight ends more than Kyler Murray, and the same can be said for offensive coordinator Drew Petzing’s offense in general.

Arizona used the most 13 personnel (three tight ends one running back) in the league last year and was used heavily in Week 1 vs. the New Orleans Saints. Reiman only had 10 receiving yards, but he is the best blocking tight end the Cardinals have. His absence could force Petzing to modify his gameplan ahead of the home opener.

How does Cardinals offense look without Reiman?

Reiman stands at 6’5 and 271 pounds. His massive frame made him a valuable piece in the run game. The 23-year-old acted as a sixth offensive lineman, which would protect Murray in play action or create holes for running back James Conner.

The depth chart does have three other tight ends: Trey McBride, Elijah Higgins and Travis Vokolek. Arizona could theoretically still run 13 personnel, especially with Vokolek being 6’6 260 pounds himself. However, Petzing might shift to a more pass-heavy look against Carolina.

Murray battled a sickness in Week 1 and wasn’t able to fully show off what he’s been working in the offseason with his wide receivers. Marvin Harrison Jr. will be covered by Pro Bowl cornerback Jaycee Horn, but Michael Wilson or Zay Jones could swoop in to have a massive day with the loss of a receiving threat in Reiman.

Can Cardinals rookie CB Will Johnson continue stellar start in Week 2?
