Commanders’ fan Kevin Durant gets last laugh after Lions running back’s tribute

It is no secret that Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant loves his hometown D.C. and the Washington Commanders, so you know that the two-time NBA champion would support his team in the NFL Playoffs if he could.

The Suns downed the Detroit Pistons 125-121 Saturday in the Motor City, leaving time for Durant and teammate Devin Booker to swing over to Ford Field before heading home. Booker, a Michigan native and Lions fan, made a comedically, friendly wager with Durant on whose team would continue on to the NFC Championship.

It’s hard to keep a low profile when you’re Durant. The 14-time NBA All-Star posted LiAngelo Ball preparing to perform his hit song “Tweaker” before kickoff, outing his location. Lions running back Jahmy Gibbs must’ve heard Durant was in the building, too.

Both teams started the game with scoreless drives, seeing the Lions’ go three-and-out on the game-opener and watching the Commanders get stopped on fourth-and-short to put the ball back in Detroit’s hands. Gibbs wouldn’t walk off the field without putting points on the board twice.

The running back found a crease on the one-yard line and slipped into the end zone for the first six points of the game and paid homage to rivaling Durant in the process.

Gibbs gave us a flashback to 2017 with his celebration, mimicking the viral pregame warmup dance by Durant in Game 5 of the 2017 NBA Finals. Durant was not feeling the Lions’ stars showmanship and took to X immediately in response.

“I’m already sick of @Jahmyr_Gibbs1. Move around somewhere bro damn,” Durant tweeted.

Durant’s dance preceded the Golden State Warriors final win of the Finals series that year, giving the Commanders’ fan his first NBA championship and being named Finals MVP. Gibbs must’ve done the dance wrong or something, as the Lions didn’t get the same luck.

The Commanders thwarted Gibbs’ early effort with an onslaught of points for the remainder of the game, walking off the field as the victors in a 45-31 finish. It was the first NFC Divisional win for Washington since 1991.

Gibbs did what he has done all season, racking up 105 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. His additional six catches for 70 yards were second on the team behind First Team All-Pro wide receiver Amon St. Brown (8 receptions, 137 yards). His 175 all-purpose yards were enough to make him standout as the blooming superstar he is, but not enough to get his team a win.

Durant wouldn’t let him forget either.

In very Durant fashion — who has a history of trolling, arguing and a string of burner account callouts over the years on social media — took to X to big adieu to Ford Stadium and the Lions while Detroit said farewell to its 2024 season Super Bowl dreams with the original video of his dance.

“Have a great night Detroit,” Durant said.
