GLENDALE – As debuts go, Carson Beck couldn’t have had a better one. The Arizona Cardinals rookie quarterback wore the all-red uniforms for the first time against the Carolina Panthers in Thursday’s Hall of Fame preseason game. The high scoring affair saw Arizona lose 33-30, but the biggest piece of news was the prowess that Beck illustrated in his five drives.

While only being one preseason game, fans are already ready to anoint Beck as a franchise quarterback.

Beck dealing in his preseason debut:
The 24-year-old went 15-of-19 on passes for 188 passing yards and a touchdown. His 125.4 passing rating is stellar for the rookie, and a 9.9 yards per attempts is already higher than any year in college. Beck doubters had experts worried about his deep ball and overall accuracy, Thursday was a massive answer for those qualms, especially hitting Jalen Brooks on an explosive 49-yard pass.
Head coach Mike LaFleur made Beck’s life much easier in the pocket, drawing up plenty of bootlegs out to the flats or curls to avoid pressure. However, the pressure was almost non-existent. Beck was only sacked once and had a relatively clean pocket to deliver his throws. The only question remaining is how he responds to extensive pressure and getting sacked multiple times.

Beck is seen in the eyes of the organization as the third-string QB behind Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew. The Cardinals did sign Brissett to a massive $15.5 million payday, making him the clear starter for 2026. Despite the pay increase, Arizona knows the 10-year pro isn’t the answer long-term, entering a crossroad next offseason. Before facing that decision, the franchise needs to know if Beck is a serious player. Thursday says yes, but in a real football game can he handle the pressure?
His experiences and mentality says he’s ready for the spotlight, but only time will tell if the Cardinals give him that opportunity later in the year.
