Every postseason eventually becomes a battle of pitching depth. Offenses cool off, games become tighter, and managers lean heavily on starters capable of keeping elite lineups under control. That’s where Mize could have changed the equation; he could have provided Arizona another dependable option every fifth day while reducing pressure on the rest of the rotation throughout the stretch run. Just as important, acquiring another strong SP would create a ripple effect across the entire pitching staff. Other starters can remain in more natural roles, the bullpen avoids unnecessary overuse, and manager Torey Lovullo gains more flexibility in how he approaches critical series against playoff-caliber opponents.

For a team built around explosive young talent, reliable pitching has often been the difference between winning a series and watching games slip away. Arizona’s offense has repeatedly shown it can score against anyone, but sustainable October success has always depended on consistently getting quality innings from the rotation. This move also would have sent a powerful message to the clubhouse. Rather than asking the current roster to simply overcome its weaknesses, the front office invested in solving one of them. Those decisions matter inside a clubhouse because they reinforce belief that every season is an opportunity worth chasing.

The Diamondbacks not being able to land Casey Mize after being linked to the stable starting pitcher stings. Teams with championship aspirations understand that elite pitching isn’t a luxury in October; it’s a necessity. If the pitching depth that is returning for Arizona competes the way the D-backs believe, this could become the move fans point to as the moment where Arizona passed on a for-sure starting option in belief of their talent already. Whether that seems to be the right move heading into the postseason, only time will tell.
