With a pivotal game upcoming against Kansas State that could change the trajectory of how far ASU can go this season, Sun Devils head coach Kenny Dillingham provided a significant update on the status of star running back Cam Skattebo.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! After practice on Wednesday, Dillingham announced that, unless something prohibits him from playing, he will start and face the Wildcats.
“He’s doing really well. He is gonna play barring something changing. You would expect him to play the football game, I fully expect him to play this week unless something changes,” Dillingham said. “It’s exciting to get him back barring something happening over the next couple of days, and I know he is ready to get back.”
Skattebo was forced to miss Arizona State’s last game against UCF due to an unspecified injury he had sustained the week prior vs. Oklahoma State. He was seen without his shoulder pads and jersey in the fourth quarter of the OSU game before being ruled out for the remainder of the 42-21 blowout win. The 5-foot-11 senior was named the Big 12 Conference Player of the Week last Monday for a 274-yard game against Oklahoma State where he scored three touchdowns.
In his second season as a Sun Devil, Skattebo has rushed for 1,001 yards and 11 touchdowns while also corralling 27 catches for an additional 404 yards and two touchdowns. Making the transition from the Pac-12 to the Big 12, he has earned Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors four times this year.
Another key player who was unable to play against UCF was linebacker Keyshaun Elliott and Dillingham stated he was in the “same boat” as Skattebo, indicating he will be good to go as well in Manhattan. Elliott encountered a stinger to his neck vs. Oklahoma State and was inactive last Saturday against Central Florida.
Elliott has 32 tackles, one interception and two pass breakups in his first year at ASU since transferring from New Mexico State.
Arizona State and Kansas State will go head-to-head in arguably the most significant Big 12 matchup on Saturday at 5 p.m. MST. Whoever wins this game will increase their chances of making the Big 12 Championship game while the other’s hopes will dwindle significantly.
