Predicted to finish dead last in the Big 12 at the beginning of the season, ASU has clinched the six-win threshold and is going to play in a bowl game after back-to-back 3-9 seasons.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Sam Leavitt completed 20-of-29 passes for 304 yards and three touchdowns, Cam Skattebo finished with 274 all-purpose yards of offense and two touchdowns and Kyson Brown scored two touchdowns as well for Arizona State (6-2, 3-2). The Sun Devils produced 529 of total yardage.
Here are some takeaways from ASU’s first win over Oklahoma State since 1993:
-Skattebo continues to take the Big 12 by storm with two touchdowns, 80 rushing yards from 16 carries, two receptions for 61 yards and two touchdowns before the weather delay. He broke through multiple tackles, used his speed and wrecked havoc on the Cowboys.
-Leavitt had no visible complications with his rib injury which he has dealt with since Oct. 11 when he was brutally tackled against Utah. He rushed seven times for five yards and went to throwing the ball or giving it to Skattebo since he wasn’t given anything when scrambling.
-Javan Robinson picked up his first interception as a Sun Devil after sustaining an injury to his arm against Cincinnati two weeks ago. The Washington State transfer has 16 tackles this season and two pass breakups in eight games.
-After the interception by Robinson, Justin Wodtly was ejected in the second quarter for apparently spitting at an opposing Oklahoma State player. He was visibly distraught with the official’s decision and made his case that he did nothing of the sort.
-The duo of Leavitt and Jordyn Tyson didn’t miss a beat after the one-game absence of Leavitt. Though he let a pass slip between his grasp and didn’t get a pass interference called his way, Tyson led all ASU receivers with 81 receiving yards from eight catches and a 22-yard touchdown.
-The game was moved up from starting at 4 p.m. AZT to 12:30 p.m. with thunderstorms in the forecast around Stillwater. Despite the change of time for kick-off, the rain and lightning caused almost a two-and-a-half weather delay and the game didn’t resume until about 4:55 p.m.
-Oklahoma State running back Ollie Gordon II, the reigning Doak Walker Award winner for best collegiate running back in the country, showed flashes of why he was recognized for such a prestigious honor last year. He was limited to just 25 yards from 11 carries and a touchdown.
-Carrying on its defensive success seen against Cincinnati, Arizona State limited Oklahoma State to a single touchdown in the second half for the second game in a row.
-Kyson Brown scored his first two rushing touchdowns of the year after limited usage before the game because of Skattebo dominating. Brown had more carries against OSU (15) than he did all season (14) and now is up to 143 rushing yards. DeCarlos Brooks only ran twice for five yards in the win.
-Skattebo reached over 1,000 rushing yards this season (1,001) with 153 vs. the Cowboys. The 5-foot-11 running back sat on the bench for most of the fourth quarter with the score differential so wide. Since transferring from Sacramento State, the California native has hit 1,000-plus all-purpose yardage in back-to-back seasons.
