2024 Hall of Famers

Micky Benedetti (Diving) | 2006-09
Valerye Boyer-Wells (Women’s Track and Field) | 1978-81
Katelyn Boyd (Softball) | 2009-12
Roger Detter (Baseball, Men’s Basketball, Track & Field) | 1965-69
Azahara Munoz (Women’s Golf) | 2005-09
John Spini (Gymnastics) – Hall of Distinction | 1981-2014
Will Sutton (Football) | 2009-13

Spini is heading to the Hall of Distinction, which is where ASU commemorates and honors the best coaches and administrators in Sun Devil Athletics history. He coached the gymnastics program for 34 seasons (1981-2014) where he led Arizona State to 21 NCAA Championship appearances, was a four-time Pac-10 Coach of the Year and held a career record of 359-235-2.

From Rome, Italy, Benedetti was an All-American eight times and a Pac-10 champion six times. In 2008, he was the first and remains the only diver in Sun Devil history to win each of the 1m Springboard, 3m Springboard and Platform events. He was named Pac-10 Diver of the Year in 2007 and 2008 while making history in multiple instances. He competed for Italy in 3m Springboard diving at the 2012 London Olympics.

Detter is known around the university as one of the best to ever suit up in any sport at Arizona State because he was a three-sport athlete. In baseball, he was a national champion in 1967 and 1969, broke the stolen base record (7) in the College World Series in 1969 and was named to the All-CWS team. While a baseball season would be going on, Detter also competed in all home javelin events in track & field. As a point guard in basketball, Detter was the program’s 1968 MVP and still remains the school’s leader in consecutive free throws scored (36).

During a star-studded career at ASU, Boyer-Wells was a four-year Sun Devil and a six-time All-American in the 100-meter, 200-meter, 4×100-meter relay and the 4×220-yard. She competed on two national championship teams in the 4×110-yard relay in back-to-back seasons in 1978 and 1979. Individually, Boyer went on to win the 100-meter, 200-meter dash and the 4×100-meter relay and claimed three conference titles in the Western Collegiate Athletic Association. Before she graduated, Boyer-Wells broke four ASU records in the 100-meter, 200-meter, 4×100-meter relay and the 4×440-yard relay.

Known for her stellar offensive prowess, Boyd was a .391 hitter with a .728 slugging and .505 on-base percentage for Sun Devil Softball. She smashed 10 or more home runs every season she played, including 18 home runs during her junior year and 19 as a senior. When she ended her collegiate career at Arizona State, Boyd was the leader in doubles (60) and RBIs (236) at the time. In 2011, she helped the Sun Devils win the National Championship as she had a .429 average, 18 home runs and 66 RBIs. The Phoenix native was also a three-time NFCA All-America, All-Region and All-Pac-12 selection.

Munoz was the winner of the 2008 NCAA Individual Title and the ninth women’s Sun Devil golfer ever to win the National Championship. She also guided Arizona State to the 2009 NCAA Championship, was a four-time All-American and made the Pac-10 First Team All-Conference in all four seasons at ASU.  She has been a regular figure in the LPGA tour where she has played professionally for over a decade, starting with her being 2010 LPGA Rookie of the Year. So far in her career, she has six professional wins. On the international stage, she has been a Spanish Olympian three times in the 2016 Rio, 2020 Tokyo and 2024 Paris Games. In Paris, she and fellow former Sun Devil Carlota Ciganda were both of Spain’s representatives in the women’s golf tournament, with Munoz shooting a 3-under par that landed her in a five-way tie for 13th place.

A key contributor on Sun Devil Football’s defensive line, Sutton played 51 games (34 starts) with 161 career tackles and 20.5 sacks. He earned consensus All-American honors in 2012 after recording a team-high 13 sacks and 23.5 tackles for loss. In 2013, Sutton became both the Mike Haynes Defensive MVP and Frank Kush Captains Award winner. A native of California, the 32-year-old was just the second two-time Pat Tillman Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year in conference history. The Chicago Bears would end up drafting him in the third round (82nd overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft before he played 36 games (18 starts), collecting seven pass breakups and 60 tackles across three seasons (2014-16). After being released by the Bears, the 6-foot-1, 289-pound lineman then signed – but never played – with the San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings. He has not been on an NFL roster since 2018.

All seven of the honorees will be introduced at ASU’s football game vs. Kansas on Oct. 5.
