After Corbin Carroll tripled, rookie Adrian Del Castillo drew a five-pitch walk, and Geraldo Perdomo battled through a couple of foul balls to earn a walk, Jake McCarthy delivered a clutch, two-out, two-strike walk-off base hit down the third-base line, securing a 4-3 win for the Diamondbacks over the Colorado Rockies.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! It was McCarthy’s third hit of the night. Since July 27th, he’s been on fire, going 26-for-53 (.490) at the plate, boosting his season batting average to .311, the highest on the team.
The Diamondbacks have now won 9 of their last 10 games and are 23-6 since July 10th. During this stretch, 11 of their victories have been by just one run.
Somehow, some way, they keep finding ways to win ballgames. Even with the Padres winning nine of their last 10 and the Dodgers on a five-game winning streak, the Diamondbacks are just 3.5 games back from first place in the NL West.
After McCarthy sent Chase Field into a frenzy with his first career walk-off, he was, of course, treated to an ice water bath. Speaking on the Diamondbacks’ postgame show, McCarthy didn’t focus on his heroics but instead praised the gutsy at-bats that set up his game-winning hit. “There were what, four or five awesome at-bats before that? Del Castillo comes off the bench and works a walk. I almost think taking pitches in that situation is the hardest thing to do. You know, with two outs, you need your guys to come through for you. Going into it, I was thinking I probably wouldn’t even get an at-bat here, so credit to them.”
