Five games into the Phoenix Mercury’s season, and veteran point guard Natasha Cloud has seamlessly fit into her role. Cloud is known for her scrappy play — doing all of the ‘little things’ that help fill in the gaps on a nightly basis. Her hard-nosed defense, infectious energy, and vocal leadership have been driving factors in the Mercury’s newfound culture. However, what may be the most impactful part of Cloud’s game is her passing.

Averaging 8.8 assists per game, Cloud currently ranks first in the WNBA in assists per game. At second is Connecticut’s Alyssa Thomas, averaging 7.8 assists per game, one full assist behind Cloud.

The former second-round pick is having a career year as an initiator. A bulk of the credit has gone to Kahleah Copper for stepping into her new role and becoming an offensive juggernaut in Phoenix, but not enough people are talking about Cloud’s ability to run the offense. Tibbetts consistently runs various actions to Cloud, allowing her to set up the offense and create opportunities for her teammates.

Cloud is also averaging a career-high two steals per game, being a thorn in the side of the opposition consistently. Cloud has been the backbone of Phoenix’s culture early on this season, and is elevating her game to new heights in her ninth season.
