NEW YORK — DeWanna Bonner is heading back to the WNBA Finals, just one year after helping the Phoenix Mercury reach the championship series.
This time, though, she’ll try to finish the job with the Atlanta Dream.

The Dream completed a three-game sweep of the New York Liberty with an 85-83 win Friday night, earning their first Finals appearance since 2013. Bonner, who began the season in Phoenix before accepting a buyout in August to join Atlanta, helped seal the win by making two free throws with 6.2 seconds left.
While she won’t be donning a Mercury jersey in the Finals this time around, Bonner’s latest postseason run showcases just how valuable her experience can be.

Phoenix reached the Finals last season with Bonner, Kahleah Copper, Satou Sabally and Alyssa Thomas leading the way before losing to the Las Vegas Aces in four games. Coming off the bench, Bonner knocked down timely shots, while her veteran presence helped the team maintain its composure when things weren’t going its way.
That same experience is paying off in Atlanta. Through five playoff games, Bonner is averaging 13.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists. One of her best performances came in Game 1 of the semifinals against the Liberty after Atlanta lost star Alisha Gray, with Bonner stepping up with 23 points and nine rebounds.

The 17-year veteran won titles with Phoenix in 2009 and 2014 and spent much of her career establishing herself as one of the league’s most reliable postseason performers. Now, she has a chance to add a third trophy to her collection and prove her value on the biggest stage once again, this time with Atlanta.
The Dream will face either the Las Vegas Aces or Golden State Valkyries when the Finals begin Oct. 17.
DeWanna Bonner will play in her fifth WNBA Finals, tied for the third-most all-time. https://t.co/6Afb4s5ouD
