Geraldo Perdomo to play live games very shortly, Merrill Kelly to start throwing program

Geraldo Perdomo turns a double play against the New York Yankees.

Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo has made encouraging progress in his rehab from right meniscus surgery. Manager Torey Lovullo told reporters, including Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic, that they’re planning to get Perdomo into live games “very, very shortly”. He would start at the complex league, then go on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno.

Perdomo, 24, has been down since April 3 after tearing the meniscus in his right knee against the New York Yankees. The team turned to Blaze Alexander, then Kevin Newman at the shortstop position. Newman has done an admirable job, hitting .265 with two home runs and a .710 OPS on the season entering play May 28. Perdomo is coming off an All-Star season, putting up a .242/.353/.359 slash in 144 games in 2023. His ability to get on base was a key component of their lineup.

Lovullo also said Merrill Kelly is expected to start a throwing program next week. Kelly has been out since April 21 with a teres major strain in his right shoulder and has been on the 60-day injured list since May 2. He had been pitching well, with a 2.19 ERA in four starts. The Diamondbacks have had to piece the rotation in his absence, with Tommy Henry, Slade Cecconi, and Blake Walston getting opportunities with mixed results.
