GCU Baseball clinch NCAA Tournament berth after strong regular season in the WAC

Despite losing both of their games in the WAC Tournament, GCU Baseball will return to the NCAA Division I baseball tournament for the third time in four years after stellar conference play in the regular season.

Since the 2024 WAC Tournament champion Tarleton State is ineligible for the NCAA postseason, GCU clinched the conference’s automatic berth as the WAC regular-season champion with a 23-7 record. Tarleton State is in the last year of its program’s Division I transition period after reclassifying.

The Lopes lost to the No. 5 seed Tarleton State 4-2 on Thursday and No. 7 UT Rio Grande Valley 10-9 on Saturday. After dominating in the WAC throughout the season, Grand Canyon are 2-5 in their last seven heading into the NCAA regional.

Looking to lead GCU to glory, WAC Player of the Year Tyler Wilson is carrying a .381 average to the tournament. In his senior year as a Lope, the Hamilton High School product also has 16 home runs and a .693 SLG% in 54 games.

Two-time WAC Coach of the Year Gregg Wallis will have a squad consisting of eleven Grand Canyon players who were also on the last regional team back in 2022. Wilson, Elijah Buries, Dustin Crenshaw, Cade Verdusco, Maxwell Andeel, Beau Ankeney, Daniel Avitia, John Sheehan, Shawn Triplett, Bryan Webb and Carter Young all were part of the program were all Lopes then.

The 64-team field will be revealed on Monday at 9 a.m. PT on ESPN 2, and GCU will find out their schedule going forward. With 16 regionals set to take place, there will be four teams in each and it will be double-elimination beginning on Friday through June 3.
