ESPN just released its first in-season WNBA power rankings of the season, with the Phoenix Mercury (1-1) slotting in at fifth.

The Mercury rank ahead of the Atlanta Dream (1-1), Seattle Storm (1-2), Chicago Sky (1-1), Dallas Wings (1-1), Los Angeles Sparks (0-2), Washington Mystics (0-3), and Indiana Fever (0-3).

The power rankings highlight the offensive philosophy that Nate Tibbetts has brought to the team, Kahleah Copper’s career-best performance against Atlanta, and Natasha Mack’s emergence in Brittney Griner’s absence.

CBS Sports and the WNBA itself also put out its first power rankings. Phoenix ranked sixth on CBS’ list, and seventh on the WNBA’s list. Despite lower rankings, each outlet had positive takeaways from Phoenix’s first two-games, and were impressed with its high-level of play without Griner.

As the season remains young, Phoenix has the opportunity to rise in the rankings with the eventual return of Griner. To say the least, it’s been a bright start for the Mercury, a team that is completely revamped from last season with a new coach at the helm.
