Two in-state teams have an opportunity at home-court advantage with a deep tournament run. The Grand Canyon Antelopes and Arizona Wildcats remain in play.

Wildcats continue to dominate

No. 2 Arizona strolled through their Round of 64 matchup with an 85-65 victory against No. 15 Long Beach State on Thursday.

The Wildcats (26-8) look to make their first Final Four appearance since 2001. They will next face the No. 7 seeded Dayton Flyers on Saturday, March 23 at 9:45 a.m. MST for a spot in the Sweet 16.

GCU looks for first tourney run

No. 12 Grand Canyon has put together its best season in history and is coming off yet another WAC Championship win.

The Lopes (29-4) will face Saint Mary’s tonight at 7:05 p.m. MST with a chance to win their first NCAA Tournament game ever.

While speaking to the media on Tuesday, senior GCU forward and Phoenix native Gabe McGlothan was asked how special it would feel to play in the Final Four at home.

“I’d say that’d just be indescribable,” McGlothan said. “Being able to play as a Phoenix team, a local Phoenix guy playing the Final Four in Phoenix, I think has a poetic story to it.”

The NCAA Men’s Final Four last took place in the valley six years ago in 2017. The games were played at the University of Arizona Stadium, which held over 77,000 people at a time.

This stands as one of the highest recorded attendance numbers for a NCAA Men’s Basketball game ever.

Phoenix and the NCAA world continue to await one of the biggest sporting events of the year. State Farm Stadium and the valley will be rocking regardless of who makes the Final Four.

Still, GCU and Arizona are doing all they can to represent the state at home next month.
