Inspired by the Chicago Girls Who Walk, operations for the PBWW began in May 2022.

Hope Word, the Operations Manager and Co-Founder, said in an interview, “A huge component of the people we are reaching are people who are new to Phoenix… We joined with the intention of ‘how do we make friends in the area that isn’t going to bars, being on dating apps, or spending money?’ So many events require you to spend $20 just to go outside, so finding a way to connect with other people that’s affordable and financially accessible is really important to us.”

Walking trails are selected by their ability to accommodate 150 – 250 attendees.  Locations change to allow for greater participation, for those who live further away. Word highlighted how the majority of attendees are new every week.

During a PBWW walk, Hope met Rebecca, a ticket and operations associate for the Chicago Cubs. Rebecca advocated on their behalf with Cubs management, securing over 160 exclusive tickets for the Babes.

Despite the Cubs losing the game, their hospitality won the hearts of the Phoenix Babes. Word revealed, “We have done similar things in the past with the Diamondback, so were absolutely interested… So many people are midwesterners here, so we had a huge Cubs fan base already.”

Word praised her experience with Cubs management by saying, “It was amazing! The Cubs were so easy to work with. They were very accommodating, we have 160 plus tickets sold, so we had a pretty big section to manage. All of those operations went very smoothly.”

Attending the game provided PBWW members a unique way to connect. Giving them all a piece of common ground to stand on. Different and more involved than yoga in the park at Chase Field.

There is currently no additional events scheduled with either the Cubs or Diamondbacks. The Phoenix Babes Who Walk are expanding their horizons, exploring future events and collaborations with the Mercury and Suns.
