Wildcard Race Update After Diamondbacks Win Series in Chicago

© Matt Marton-USA TODAY Sports

The National League Wildcard race is a tight one, but where do the Diamondbacks stand after a series win in Chicago? There are five teams that over the last month or so have been playing tug of war over the third Wildcard spot. Arizona has constantly been in the mix over that span, and after taking a big series against the Cubs, they’re right in the thick of it.

The Diamondbacks currently hold the third Wildcard spot and are just half a game above the Miami Marlins. After taking the first three games of the series, the Diamondbacks found themselves just one game below the Cubs for the third spot. But, dropping game four found them two games below Chicago heading into New York to take on the Mets. Despite a rough patch, the San Francisco Giants are still just two gams back from the Diamondbacks, half a game below the Reds.

The Diamondbacks are in a great position to find themselves in the post season, having two series against Wildcard contenders. Arizona will host the Chicago Cubs once they return back to Phoenix for a three game set. The Diamondbacks also take on the San Francisco Giants at home, following the Cubs series. Five straight games against Wildcard race opponents, if they play their cards right, can help Arizona find themselves playing October baseball.

Control what you can control

Arizona is the only team that’s part of the Wildcard race lucky enough to find themselves playing truly meaningful games. No other team in the race has more than one, if one, series against Wildcard race opponents directly.

Arizona truly controls their own fate. The Diamondbacks take on the New York Mets tomorrow evening with a first pitch at 4:40 pm PST from New York. Zach Davies will be on the bump for the Diamondbacks.
