Kenny Dillingham made a surprising move this offseason when he added now Sophomore QB Sam Leavitt through the transfer portal from Michigan State.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The move was surprising because ASU already has a sophomore quarterback who is expected to be the future of this team in Jaden Rashada. If Dillingham goes out and brings in an older QB, that is fine because it adds depth, but when you add a QB who is the same class as your already young starter, it brings about a QB competition.
However, when asked why he brought in Leavitt, Dillingham said this:
“I talked to Jaden (Rashada) and said we would bring in a QB in the transfer portal.” Dillingham said, “He told me that he welcomes competition and isn’t afraid to compete, so I knew he was ready. You have to take it when you get a chance at two top QBs in the same class like that.”
Dillingham: Told Jaden Rashada he was going to add a QB in the portal, and Jaden was not afraid of the competition.
New QB Sam Leavitt was also not someone scared of competition.

Leavitt and Rashada both looked impressive in limited action last season. However, Rashada had an injury issue that kept him out most of the year, so Dillingham had to bring in depth. It is good to hear that Rashada wanted competition. Some young QBs would run to the transfer portal if a team made this move. The fact that Rashada didn’t leave proves he can live up to his high expectations here in Tempe.
It will be a battle all winter between Leavitt and Rashada, but it will be entertaining come Spring ball.
