Coyotes Focus on Special Teams During Practice Before Game vs. Blues

The Arizona Coyotes wrapped-up a practice today at Ice Den Scottsdale following a 4-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings last night.

This was my first practice that I have been allowed to go to and seeing some players that I used to watch growing up before college was surreal.

I also was able to meet people like Coyotes pregame, intermission and postgame on-air talent Jody Jackson from the team’s broadcasting station, CW/Arizona 61, and other media members around the team.

Practice

To begin, the players did a shoot-around on an open-net to get warmed up and ready.

Then, the team was divided into white and black jerseys and they would do a one-on-one drill with an attacker and defender going at each other.

Whoever was on offense, they would transition to defense and go up against a new player trying to score.

The cycle would repeat before the team went onto do a 5-on-2 drill.

In this, a full line would attempt to orchestrate crisp passing before eventually shooting the puck at either Coyotes goaltender, Connor Ingram or Karel Vejmelka.

Players like left wing Clayton Keller and rookie Logan Cooley would fly by their teammates before whipping passes around.

Additionally, ‘Yotes head coach André Tourigny was directing his team through multiple plays and different techniques.

However, there were a few instances where Tourigny would pause practice and shouted if mistakes were made.

To conclude, the ‘Yotes would spend the last-20 minutes focusing on special teams.

Previously, the Coyotes went 0-for-6 on the power-play and gave up a shorthanded goal while on the man-advantage versus the Kings.

What was interesting was that despite this being a power-play drill, the penalty-killers were able to attack if they had possession of the puck.

At the end of practice, the team went into a huddle and concluded the session in Scottsdale.

Up next, the Coyotes look to snap a two-game losing streak as they host the St. Louis Blues inside Mullett Arena on Nov. 22 at 7 p.m.
