GLENDALE – Michael Wilson’s contract extension has become one of the Arizona Cardinals’ most important preseason conversations, but now that has come to a close as ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that Wilson will stay in Arizona with a three-year contract extension worth $75M with a maximum value of $78M and $47M guaranteed in the deal.

“Show me the money!” Rod Tidwell’s famous demand in Jerry Maguire has become one of the most recognizable lines in sports-movie history. Now, it feels oddly appropriate for Michael Wilson and the Cardinals. Wilson might not be standing in a room screaming at his agent, but the message was simple. It seems that message got through because Arizona believed he was part of their long-term future, and proved it with a contract extension.

The timing matters, too. Wilson’s emergence became particularly noticeable when Marvin Harrison Jr. was sidelined, and Jacoby Brissett received an opportunity at quarterback. Those circumstances gave Wilson more responsibility, and he responded. Now the Cardinals will be keeping their breakout WR in the desert for three more seasons.

That is precisely why Arizona wanted to get this done. Losing Wilson would have created another hole in an offense already depending heavily on its young core. The Cards believing he can remain a dependable difference-maker, and not waiting until free agency, might have saved them some money as well. The question isn’t simply whether Wilson deserved to get paid. It’s whether Arizona was willing to “show him the money”, and they did.
