Over their last five games the Diamondbacks have absolutely flipped the NL Wildcard picture on its head with five straight wins. Arizona seemed to be a team that was trending in the wrong direction after going through a massive rough patch. Right after the all-star break the Diamondbacks went from first in the division, quickly down to third, and lost nine straight.

Around the league, the Diamondbacks weren’t in anyone playoff pictures. People were calling it one of the worst second half to a season, ever. The Diamondbacks were never down and out from the playoffs though, there has always been a fighting chance. Arizona has recently taken control after winning five straight against Wildcard competitors. The Diamondbacks were 1.5 games back heading into a series about two weeks ago against the Cubs. Since that time the Diamondbacks have earned the second Wildcard spot.

Arizona is currently one game up on the Cubs after a big win this afternoon over the Giants. A team that was also in the thick of the Wildcard race, but seems to be fading away from contention. San Francisco was one of the teams who was going back and forth with the Dbacks, and are now 3.5 games back.

Cincinnati and Miami are still very much alive. Chicago holds just a half a game lead over the Marlins, and one and a half game lead over the Reds. Although the Diamondbacks have lost some games, that they really should’ve won, they always show up for the big ones. Arizona took a series against the Reds, right after sweeping the Rangers. They’ve also taken two series against the cubs, sweeping them once, and one against the Giants, sweeping them as well.

The Diamondbacks, as it stands right now, are a playoff team. But, that’s not how this works, Arizona has to finish the year strong.
