Mercury Struggle Against Liberty Lose 89-69

The Phoenix Mercury traveled to New York to take on the Liberty, and it did not go well; Phoenix lost 89-69 to New York. The Liberty scored the first seven points of the game and led at halftime 35-27. Phoenix scored seven points in the third quarter, but New York went on to outscore the Mercury 30-19 in the fourth quarter to take home the victory.

Sophie Cunningham led the Mercury in scoring with 21 points. Skylar Diggins-Smith scored 13 points but struggled shooting from the field, going 4-18. However, Diggins-Smith did dish out 11 assists.

Shey Peddy added 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Diana Taurasi scored 12 points. Phoenix had all five starters score in double figures, with Brianna Turner scoring ten points. The Mercury bench did not score a single point and only grabbed one rebound.

Natasha Howard had 23 points and 12 rebounds to help New York win. Sabrina Ionescu had 10 points, 16 assists, and eight rebounds. She became the fourth player to dish out 16 assists.

The Mercury struggled shooting from the field; they shot 37.% from the field and 24% from beyond the arc. In comparison, the Liberty shot 49.3% from the field and 46.2% from three-point land. Phoenix also got outrebounded 42-26. All of the Mercury’s weaknesses came back to bite them against the Liberty.

Next, Phoneix will head to Connecticut to take on the Sun. It will be challenging because Connecticut has a lot of size on its front line compared to Phoenix.
