Cardinals redzone struggles could be solved without benching Jacoby Brissett

GLENDALE – The Arizona Cardinals have made it inside its opponent 10-yard line seven times in the past two games and have only scored one touchdown. This doesn’t include the walk-off pick six thrown by Jacoby Brissett in Week 4 vs. the New York Giants, continuing this season-long trend of failing to convert in redzone situations.

Head coach Mike LaFleur spoke with the media on Monday about these struggles and confirmed that Brissett will remain the starter for the offense. The first-year head coach admitted if the offense couldn’t get past midfield he would consider the change, but the ball is moving and he shoulders the blame about getting better in that area. Plus, a more simpler solution might fix the franchise’s struggles.

LaFleur acknowledges struggles but will remain with Brissett:

While fans want to throw in rookie Carson Beck to see if the team’s luck changes, the third-rounder is dealing with an injury that has sidelined him from practice recently. Regardless, LaFleur was going to stick with Brissett because the solution to the redzone struggles could be as simple as getting back their first-round running back Jeremiyah Love under center.

Love has missed the past two weeks due to left ankle injury, but is expected to be back to practice on Wednesday. When the 21-year-old is playing the offense have averaged 25 points, and just 16 points these past two weeks. The production isn’t jumping off the page, but opposing defenses having to prepare for a talent like Love makes all the difference of taking pressure off of Trey McBride and Michael Wilson.

Arizona’s offense becomes one dimensional without Love in the backfield. Opponents can hone in on limiting the passing game because the rushing attack is no serious threat. If Love is able to return in Week 8, LaFleur and Cardinals become a much more formidable opponent against a Dallas Cowboys defense that has struggled against Arizona in recent memory.
