PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks fans held their breath during Friday’s game as outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. exited the matchup against the Colorado Rockies with a leg injury.

During the top of the sixth inning, Gurriel Jr. made a sliding catch in left field but remained on the ground for several moments afterward. Manager Torey Lovullo and trainers quickly met with the outfielder, who had tears in his eyes, before he was eventually removed from the game.
The moment was particularly concerning for D-Backs fans, as Gurriel Jr. had recently returned from an ACL injury that kept him out of action for nearly eight months.

However, the club later announced that the outfielder was dealing with hamstring tightness. Arizona Sports’ José M. Romero reports he will be day-to-day and have tests run on the hamstring.

Despite a slow start since coming off the injured list, Gurriel Jr.’s bat has started to heat up in recent games — including Friday, when he scored Arizona’s only two runs against Colorado. Over his last seven games, he’s batting .320 with five RBIs and a .480 slugging percentage.
While the initial diagnosis does not appear serious, losing Gurriel Jr. for any amount of time would be a blow to a lineup that has recently started to click offensively — especially as he appeared to be turning a corner at the plate.

As more details about Gurriel Jr.’s status emerge, fans are hoping this is not another setback for one of the D-Backs’ most beloved players following his emotional rehab and return.
