PHOENIX — Kelsey Plum finally made her home debut in front of the Phoenix Mercury’s X-Factor, but the performance was less about a spectacular arrival and more about a measured step in her return from injury.

Plum scored 10 points in 17 minutes off the bench Tuesday night as the Mercury fell 94-84 to the Washington Mystics. It was her first game since Aug. 9, when she scored five points in 14 minutes against Washington before leaving midgame with an injury.
The guard has built a reputation for carrying a significant offensive load for her teams, so her limited role was noticeable. She shot 4-for-12 from the field and 1-for-5 from beyond the arc, adding one assist and one steal.
Her performance was understandably uneven as Plum continues to work back from a lingering injury and had very little time to practice with her new team.

“I mean, it’s pretty tough,” Plum said postgame. “I think I’ve gotten one practice and a halfish. And you know, throughout the season, practice time in general when we need to practice is pretty limited. Just because there’s so many games, you’re trying to get people to have fresh legs and things like that.”
Those circumstances have made Plum’s transition to Phoenix even more unusual. She was acquired by the Mercury from the Los Angeles Sparks on Aug. 1 and has had little opportunity to establish a rhythm with her new teammates before being sidelined.
“I’m a professional basketball player, just trying to learn on the fly,” Plum said.

That learning curve was particularly apparent defensively Tuesday night, as Plum acknowledged she struggled while adjusting to the team and getting back into game shape.
“You know, defensively tonight I was extremely poor,” Plum said. “I feel like that’s tough because that was the stuff I’ve worked on since I’ve been out. So, you know, it’s one of those things you just have to learn and watch the film and get better.”
Her return wasn’t going to immediately solve all of the Mercury’s problems. The loss showcased how much work remains for a player learning a new system while simultaneously rebuilding her conditioning and timing.

But it also offered something more important: a first glimpse of what Plum can become once the minutes, practices and repetitions begin to accumulate.
The Mercury play their second matchup against the mystics this wee on Thursday, Aug. 27, at 7 pm.
