PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks’ Ryan Waldschmidt might only have three home runs in his young MLB career so far, but his latest has put him in a club of his own.

The Arizona rookie made history Tuesday night, launching a two-run walk-off home run with two outs in the ninth inning to complete a stunning 5-4 comeback against the Chicago Cubs. The blast made Waldschmidt the first rookie in major league history to hit two walk-off home runs while his team was trailing in the same calendar month, according to OptaSTATS.
Waldschmidt’s first walk-off homer came on Aug. 7 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. His latest came after Arizona trailed Chicago 4-0 entering the eighth inning and had been held scoreless for the first 16 innings of the series.

The moment was no doubt the highlight of the night, but it also showed just how clutch Waldschmidt could be for the team. He entered the game as a pinch hitter and came to the plate with the D-backs down to their final out. After Tim Tawa walked and Jose Fernandez entered as a pinch runner and stole second, Waldschmidt worked a 2-1 count before launching a 407-foot homer into the left-field seats.
Two of his first three home runs are now synonymous with walk-off magic, putting him in some elite company even this early in the season.

The Snakes have built a reputation for comebacks, and Tuesday’s victory was their 40th of the season, tying the Cubs for the major league lead. The win also kept the D-Backs within striking distance of the National League wild-card race.
As the postseason push gets tighter, having a rookie who has already shown he can deliver in the biggest moments could be huge. It’s another reason to keep watching.

When the Diamondbacks are down to their final out, they have shown they’re never out until all 27 are made — and Waldschmidt is becoming a major part of that.
