PHOENIX – Ketel Marte’s return to the Arizona Diamondbacks will come with something no box score can measure: the reactions of D-backs fans after the situation surrounding his no-show in Boston. Arizona is targeting Marte’s return for its home series against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Ketel Marte set to return for D-backs against Phillies:
Ketel Marte is tentatively expected to be activated next Tuesday, when the D-backs open their series against the Phillies in Arizona.
The infielder began his knee rehab last Friday in Arizona, putting him on track for a potential return.

The controversy began when Marte did not report to Fenway Park for Arizona’s game against Boston. The Diamondbacks initially placed him on the restricted list, then moved him to the injured list after an MRI showed inflammation in his knee. Marte later met with manager Torey Lovullo, general manager Mike Hazen and his agent, with the organization describing the meeting as productive. Now missing time because of left-knee inflammation, the three-time All-Star is expected to rejoin a team fighting for a postseason spot.

That may explain the baseball side. It does not erase the questions. Some fans will view the episode as another sign that Marte has become a distraction. Others will remember the player who has been one of Arizona’s most important offensive forces for years, including his 2023 NLCS MVP performance during the franchise’s World Series run.

That divide could define his reception. Marte has produced 21 home runs and 67 RBIs this season despite the turbulence, and his resume makes it clear why Arizona needs him. If he returns healthy, communicates with teammates and performs when the games matter most, the controversy can eventually become a footnote. If the problems continue, the Boston incident will look less like an isolated episode and more like a pattern. For a Diamondbacks team chasing October, Marte’s return is therefore about two things: winning baseball games and rebuilding trust.
