In the top of the 11th inning, after a hit from Jackson Chourio that came back towards Thompson, his off-balance throw home sailed well wide of the plate and allowed the decisive run to score, instantly becoming the image Diamondbacks fans won’t soon forget. While every loss has multiple turning points, this one felt different because it reinforced a growing concern that has lingered throughout the season.

Arizona’s biggest opponent hasn’t always been the team in the opposite dugout. Too often, they have been self-inflicted mistakes. Mental errors, missed defensive assignments, and an inconsistent bullpen have repeatedly erased strong offensive performances and quality starts. Those moments don’t simply cost games; they chip away at confidence inside the clubhouse and patience throughout the fan base.

That’s why the reaction to Thompson has been so intense. Fans aren’t judging one throw in isolation. They’re expressing months of frustration over late-game collapses that have become all too familiar. When every game carries postseason implications, routine execution matters just as much as talent. The Diamondbacks have shown they possess the offensive firepower at times to compete with anyone. But championship-caliber teams separate themselves by limiting unforced errors, especially in pressure situations. Arizona hasn’t consistently done that. For managers and players alike, the challenge moving forward isn’t just fixing mechanics. It’s about rebuilding trust that the game won’t unravel because of avoidable mistakes.

If the Diamondbacks hope to stay in the postseason race, cleaning up the fundamentals must become a priority. Thompson’s throw will dominate the headlines, but the larger story is one Arizona has been trying to escape all season. The D-backs are talented enough to win, yet too often beat themselves when the margin for error is smallest.
