Brooks, who has built a reputation as one of the league’s most polarizing defenders, blends physical play with constant chatter and visible attempts to agitate his opponents. That edge has, at times, fueled his effectiveness—disrupting rhythm and energizing his team.
But that same edge has also led to fouls, including technicals, at times forcing head coach Jordan Ott to limit his minutes to keep him on the floor. That, Barkley said, is something Brooks must avoid with the playoffs underway.
“I love Dillon Brooks, but we need points,” Barkley said. “We don’t need antics. Those are two different animals. This [Shai Gilgeous-Alexander] is finna win his second MVP—nobody is getting under his damn skin.”

Gilgeous-Alexander, the Thunder’s star, has defined his game with patience and elite shot creation. This season, he averaged roughly 3 points per game to go along with about six assists and five rebounds while shooting efficiently from the field — numbers that underscore his MVP-caliber impact. He also remains one of the league’s leaders in free throws drawn, making him especially dangerous against overly aggressive defenders.
While Brooks’ energy could, in theory, disrupt Gilgeous-Alexander, how he channels it will matter most. Barkley has long praised Brooks’ competitive fire, but Phoenix will need him available — and productive — for extended stretches.

For a Suns team aiming for a deep postseason run, discipline is as critical as intensity. Brooks’ edge can be an asset, but only if it aligns with Phoenix’s priorities: smart defense, controlled aggression and consistent scoring.
Against elite talent, winning possessions — not headlines — will determine the outcome of this first-round series.
