Right-hander Michael Soroka set the tone in the home opener Monday, striking out 10 batters over five innings in his D-Backs debut, including throwing the first Arizona immaculate inning in 14 years. His double-digit strikeout performance marked one of the strongest first outings by a pitcher in club history, setting a franchise record with 10 strikeouts in a debut.

Soroka worked efficiently, allowing no runs and limiting contact against the Tigers. His ability to command the strike zone and generate swings and misses helped Arizona control the game and secure the win.

One night later, infielder Jose Fernandez delivered a historic debut of his own.

Called up earlier in the week to add infield depth after Pavin Smith was placed on the injured list, Fernandez wasted no time making an impact. He recorded his first MLB hit in his first at-bat and later connected for his first career home run in his second at-bat. He wasn’t finished.

With the Diamondbacks trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning, with two outs and two runners on, Fernandez delivered the biggest swing of the night. He launched a 92 mph cutter for his second home run, a three-run shot that gave the D-Backs a 7-5 lead.

Fernandez finished his debut 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs, becoming the seventh player in league history since 1901 to hit two or more homers in his MLB debut — joining Cleveland Guardians prospect Chase DeLauter as the first to do so in 10 years.

The performances marked a rare sequence in baseball: a pitcher recording 10 strikeouts in his team debut, followed by a rookie hitting two home runs in his first big league game in the same series. Each feat stands out on its own, but together they provided early-season momentum for Arizona.

The Diamondbacks will look to carry that momentum into Wednesday afternoon as they go for a sweep against Detroit at 12:40 p.m.
