With the Texas Longhorns asking out of two meetings with Arizona State, it definitely brought reactions from ASU fans, and the feelings surrounding the issue have been that the Longhorns are ducking the Sun Devils. On the surface, it’s easy to frame it that way. The last time these programs met, Texas escaped with a narrow College Football Playoff win in a game that turned into a showcase for star RB Cam Skattebo’s punishing style. It wasn’t a comfortable victory; it was survival. Those types of games tend to linger in fan memory.

Conference realignment and the scheduling changes surrounding the SEC were the major reasons for the cancellation. A marquee win for ASU, though, moves the needle for a program that is still trying to be on the rise. For Arizona State, the cancellation feels like lost validation, a chance to prove that the playoff performance wasn’t a one-off. For fans nationally, it’s a missed storyline. College football thrives on rematches with emotional residue.

What happens now after the cancelled matchup between ASU and Texas?
To replace Texas, Arizona State has announced a home-and-home series against Stanford that will be set for September 6th, 2031, at Stanford and then Sept 11th, 2032, at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe. Sun Devil fans will now get two matchups with a former Pac-12 rival.
