GLENDALE — The San Francisco 49ers announced that Brock Purdy will start against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Thursday that the Arizona native will be back in action after being sidelined with a right toe injury. Purdy’s return comes at a crucial moment for both San Francisco and Arizona, as the division rivals look to get back in the win column after devastating losses to other NFC West opponents.

Purdy’s consistency has been missing for San Francisco, including his timing, accuracy and adjustments on offense.

Before going down with the injury, Purdy had a 65.8% completion rate for 586 yards and four touchdowns.

The Arizona native returns to face his home team, hailing from Queen Creek and graduating from Perry High School. While Valley fans’ loyalty has always been to the Cardinals, they’ve consistently welcomed him back with excitement, especially given how far his career has come.

Arizona has dealt with its share of injuries and will need to rely heavily on its depth against San Francisco, with Kyler Murray and Marvin Harrison Jr. sidelined. Without a win against a divisional opponent this season, the Cardinals have another opportunity to secure their first or risk falling further down the standings.

The Cardinals and 49ers face off on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 2:05 p.m.
