Which Cardinals coach is more on the hot seat: Jonathan Gannon or Drew Petzing?

Syndication: Arizona Republic

GLENDALE – Sunday’s 22-21 loss to the Tennessee Titans could be seen as a is fireable offense for many of the Arizona Cardinals coaching staff. The franchise blew an 18-point lead to lose three straight games on walk-off field goals, this time to a winless Tennessee team. If Arizona coaches weren’t on the hot seat yet this 2025 season, Sunday changed that for the worse.

The easy answer is head coach Jonathan Gannon. The third-year Cardinals coach enter this year with his most talented roster in his tenure and the 27th easiest strength of schedule. Arizona is 2-3 and Gannon is the leader of the roster. However, many fans and media members have questioned offensive coordinator Drew Petzing and his questionable play calling that has stalled the offense through the first five games.

Which Cardinals coach is more on the hot seat?

Gannon has stated in the last three postgame losses that he shoulders the blame for the team’s defeats. He sees the franchise’s issue as a coaching issue to not getting in the right play. While it is mostly coachspeak, Gannon stating the same reasoning three weeks in a row doesn’t reflect well on him as a head coach of an NFL team.

The constant criticism the Cardinals have faced has been swatted away by Gannon stating that the team needs to be more consistent. But, if the team can’t live up to Gannon’s words or promises, then it will lead to him being benched for good.

Regardless of Arizona’s struggles to backup Gannon’s words, the blame should be placed on the play caller for the offense in Petzing. The Cardinals are 26th in total yards per game (288.4), 30th in passing yards per game (170.2), 23rd in points per game (20.6) and 27th in yards per play (4.8).

The offense last year was a fringe top 10 unit in the league, and now would be lucky to be called average. Petzing hasn’t called a complete game all season. In the first two games, Arizona scored three and seven points in the second half. Then the following two weeks, the offense scored three points in the first half of each game. Sunday saw the worst instance of this, with Petzing calling a zero-point second half in the Titans loss.

All this doesn’t include the drama surrounding second-year wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. not being a major part of the offense through the early part of the season. Petzing has struggled to adjusted to opposing defense to start his third season, with the franchise and it could lead to it to being his last.
