According to The Arizona Republic’s Nick Piecoro, Grichuk was dealt in exchange for right-handed pitcher Andrew Hoffman. The move adds to a growing group of young arms the Diamondbacks are assembling to support a staff that has been hit hard by injuries.

Who are Arizona’s newest pitchers? What do they bring to the desert?

Left-hander Brandyn Garcia was acquired from the Seattle Mariners on Thursday in a trade, sending first baseman Josh Naylor to Seattle. The Mariners’ No. 16 prospect was selected 337th overall in the 2023 MLB Draft out of Texas A&M.

Garcia posted a 3.51 ERA over 33.1 innings in the Mariners’ minor league system this season. He made his MLB debut on July 21, allowing one earned run over two innings. The 25-year-old has joined the Diamondbacks and will be used out of the bullpen.

Right-hander Ashton Izzi also came to Arizona in the same deal. The Mariners’ No. 11 prospect and a 2022 126th overall pick, Izzi made 12 starts for High-A Everett this season, posting a 5.51 ERA in 47.1 innings. He will begin his D-backs tenure with the Hillsboro Hops in the minors.

Hoffman, acquired Friday in the Grichuk trade, was selected by the Atlanta Braves as the 367th overall pick of the 2021 MLB Draft out of Illinois. He was later traded to Kansas City and spent this season in Triple-A, where he had a 2.25 ERA over 40 innings.

The 21-year-old made his MLB debut on May 30, appearing in three games for the Royals and recording a 3.86 ERA over 4.2 innings. He has been assigned to Triple-A Reno.

With the Diamondbacks’ second trade in three days focused on young pitching returns, it’s clear the team will continue to aggressively pursue more arms.
