Friday night’s suspended ending:
In what started with a rain delay and a suspended game, Friday’s matchup ended on Saturday afternoon with extra innings.
It started terribly for Arizona, as the main story of the seventh inning was Juan Morrillo walking the bases loaded. Jalen Beeks entered shortly after and looked lights out before turning the ball over to Thompson in the ninth who started out well in his appearance.

In the 10th inning, Arizona was unable to get a run across. Corbin Carroll grounded out, and after a Jose Herrera walk, Ildemaro Vargas and Tim Tawa both struck out to end the inning and leave runners stranded on the corners. Alek Thomas misread a play in center after Encarnacion-Strand hit one to center off of Ryan Thompson. That hit brought in the winning run as Arizona dropped the first game of the series by a score of 4-3.

Saturday afternoon:
Ryne Nelson wasn’t his usual self on Saturday. Seven earned runs on four hits in three innings pitched, ouch. Nelson has had a roller coaster of a season and it was an uncharacteristic start for him. Cincinnati went out to a 5-0 lead early in the bottom of the first inning.

It looked like Nelson was settling in until Kendall Graveman came in and gave up six earned runs on five hits in only one inning pitched. Graveman hit T.J. Friedl to bring in a run, and gave up a grand slam to Gavin Lux right after. It only got worse from there for the Arizona Diamondbacks as they eventually lost by a score of 13-1.

These bullpen issues have set this ball club back in numerous ways, and if it doesn’t get fixed soon, the Snakes might find themselves in the rough. Arizona will look to avoid the sweep against the Reds tomorrow at The Great American Ballpark with the first pitch being at 10:40 a.m. PT.
