FORT WORTH – Entering Sunday’s series finale, Arizona State sophomore catcher Brody Briggs have had only 26 plate appearances this season. Briggs had seven hits on the season, with only one double. ASU has a lineup of exceptional power hitters, which has caused the sophomore catcher to get lost in the shuffle with limited plate appearances. However, Briggs got his chance during Sunday’s series finale against TCU, where he smashed it out of the park, literally. The Tulsa, Oklahoma native slammed two home runs, including a grand slam in the ninth to give ASU the 12-11 win over TCU and clinch the series in its first Big 12 matchup of the season.

Briggs started Sunday with zero career home runs and zero RBIs as a Sun Devil. He ended the day with two and seven RBIs in a career-defining performance for the sophomore catcher.
Six-Run 6th for the Sun Devils:
Entering the sixth inning, ASU was down 3-1 and only had four hits on the day. The Sun Devils was coming off a historic 28 hit game and was blanked by Horned Frogs freshman left-hander Noah Franco. However, once TCU went to the bullpen it quickly went south. Junior right-hander Louis Rodriguez was the first arm out of the pen and had a short stint.
Rodriguez loaded the bases to start the sixth, and then walked in the frame’s first run on a full-count with zero outs. Head coach Kirk Saarloos went to the bullpen to preserve TCU’s lead. However, that plan didn’t work out as sophomore right-hander only went five pitches, allowing a run on a wild pitch and walking the bases loaded again.

ASU’s patience at the plate was crucial during this sequence, as TCU was struggling, and it didn’t want to bail them out by chasing for balls out of the zone. The game was tied 3-3, with the Sun Devils essentially doing nothing. Freshman infielder Landon Hairston had ASU’s first RBI of the inning with a Sac Fly to give his club the lead.
The frame crescendo with Briggs on a second pitch fastball hammering his first collegiate home run to right field to give the Sun Devils a commanding 7-3 lead.

Briggs again delivers for ASU in the 9th:
TCU cut the lead to two runs entering the ninth. Similar to the sixth, the Horned Frogs’ arms struggled to control the zone. Redshirt junior right-hander Cohen Feser couldn’t command the zone and soon walked the bases with one out. However, Feser struck out the next Sun Devil batter and was only one out away from escaping the frame unscathed. But another wild pitch gifted ASU an insurance run.

A walk to Hairston loaded the bases again for the nine-spot hitter Briggs, who, on a 1-2 count, swung at a breaking curve ball that stretched to the left field pole to escape for a grand slam. Briggs smiled as he crossed third, pointing to his dugout, knowing he had just secured his team the series win for ASU.
The Horned Frogs wouldn’t go without a fight, one uping the Sun Devils five-run ninth with a six-run stretch in the bottom half of the frame. However, TCU couldn’t make up the last run, losing the series finale 12-11 to ASU.
