There is a reason blockbuster trade proposals generate attention; it is because they make people imagine what could happen. But sometimes the most important part of a hypothetical trade is asking whether either team would actually want it.

Jonah Kubicek of Full Court Press News floated a mock draft proposal that would send Devin Booker from the Phoenix Suns to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for De’Aaron Fox and a significant package of future draft capital. For Phoenix, it is difficult to see the logic behind the move at all. The Suns would receive Fox, Atlanta’s 2027 first-round pick, San Antonio’s 2029 first, a 2030 first-round swap and a 2031 first. On paper, that is a substantial return, but Phoenix doesn’t appear positioned to prioritize a long-term rebuild.

Suns Owner Mat Ishbia and general manager Brian Gregory have consistently operated with an urgency to compete, making a Booker trade especially difficult to justify. Booker isn’t simply another valuable asset. He is the player who connects the franchise’s present to its future. Fox is an accomplished All-Star-level guard, but replacing Booker with another ball-dominant perimeter player doesn’t automatically solve Phoenix’s problems. It could simply create a different version of the same roster puzzle, while removing the player Suns fans identify most strongly with the franchise. That’s the real issue with this proposal.
