TORONTO – For Diamondbacks fans, Paul Sewald getting claimed by the Toronto Blue Jays per Steve Gilbert is raising questions after how he just performed for Arizona.

Sewald, a veteran closer who once looked like a reliable late-inning weapon, is getting another shot with the Toronto Blue Jays. Toronto is 2.5 games out of an American League wild-card spot, making the move an understandable gamble. Perhaps a different clubhouse, different coaching staff and different environment can help revive him.

But Arizona fans have seen the other side of that gamble. Sewald was not simply inconsistent for the Diamondbacks. His recent performance became difficult to defend, particularly when his stuff completely deteriorated. Closers can survive an occasional bad result. They become liabilities when the underlying arsenal no longer consistently supports the role. That is what makes Toronto’s decision fascinating. The Blue Jays are not necessarily betting on the Sewald Diamondbacks fans remember. They are betting that the veteran still has enough experience, pitch knowledge and composure to rediscover something that disappeared in Arizona.

And there is legitimate strategic logic behind that. Toronto does not need Sewald to become an All-Star. It needs him to become a competent bullpen option during a playoff chase.
For Diamondbacks fans, meanwhile, the move offers a reminder that baseball careers rarely end as cleanly as they appear. A pitcher can look finished in one environment and suddenly become useful somewhere else. That possibility should not erase what happened in Arizona. But it makes Sewald’s Toronto chapter worth watching, and potentially worth remembering if he proves the Diamondbacks wrong.
