ASU Bobby Hurley future with program “out of his hands”

TEMPE – Arizona State men’s basketball wrapped up the regular season going 13-18, drawing the 15th seed in the Big 12 tournament. ASU started the season 10-3, but a rough inaugural season in the Big 12 saw the program go 3-15, including nine straight home losses. The midseason collapse by the Sun Devils has raised questions of how to fix the sinking ship, with many fingers pointed towards the captain head coach Bobby Hurley.

Hurley has been with the program for a decade and is second all-time in wins for ASU. However, in four of the past five seasons, the Sun Devils have had losing seasons, raising the question about Hurley’s job security.

ASU head coach Bobby Hurley on his future:

“I’m here just getting ready for the Big 12 tournament. All those decisions are really out of my hands…I would prefer to not discuss any conversations that we have right now.”

ASU already lost a head coach in its basketball program, Natasha Adair. Now, Arizona State’s athletic director, Graham Rossini, has another decision to make about the men’s program on whether he wants to continue with Hurley.

Hurley signed a two-year contract extension last year, keeping him in Tempe until the end of the 2025-2026 season. ASU has the option to have him finish out the contract next season and not face any repercussions. However, Rossini has illustrated in the past that he values winning over anything, meaning Hurley could be gone before his final year.

The Sun Devils start in the Big 12 tournament on Tuesday against Kansas State. Hurley’s time in Tempe might already be over, but a good showing in the conference tournament could buy him one more year at ASU.
