After a rough 2024 season where Montgomery posted a career-worst 6.23 ERA and was eventually demoted to the bullpen, the left-hander has decided to exercise his $22.5 million player option for 2025 rather than test free agency.

Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick openly labeled Montgomery’s signing as the team’s “biggest mistake” of the season, saying he took full responsibility for the costly move.

Yet, despite Kendrick’s wishes, Montgomery has determined that he will make more money by exercising the option instead of testing free agency.

Montgomery has spoken negatively often about his former agent Scott Boras. The veteran has accused Boras of “butchering” his 2024 free agency.

Now, the Diamondbacks will have a decision to make on whether or not they will trade Montgomery over the offseason.
