In June 2023, the Pistons signed Williams to a six-year, $78.5 million contract to become their next head coach. The team went on to lose 28 straight games, the longest losing streak in NBA history, before he was fired.
While Detroit and Williams went their separate ways this offseason, the Pistons still owe him $65 million over the next five years after the early termination of his deal.
Now that he is no longer in the NBA, he has the opportunity to spend more time with his son and coach the school that he is attending.
According to 247Sports, Elijah is a high four-star recruit and ranked as the top high school player in Texas in the class of 2026. The 6-foot-6 forward has received offers from the University of Arizona, California, Missouri, Temple, Notre Dame, Oregon and Washington.
Hired by the Suns in 2019 following a 19-63 season, Monty Williams finished with an overall record of 194-115 (.628) with Phoenix. While he was in the Valley, the Suns went on to go to the 2021 NBA Finals, were 8-0 in the bubble during the COVID-19 pandemic and clinched multiple winning records. Williams was named the NBA Coach of the Year in 2022 after a 64-win season.
Despite all of what he accomplished with the team, the Suns decided to part ways with Williams after they eventually lost to the 2023 NBA champions, the Denver Nuggets, in a six-game, second-round series.
The Suns then hired Frank Vogel as Williams’ replacement, but Vogel only lasted just one season. Last year, Phoenix was 49-33 as well as them being swept in the first round by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
To continue the carousel of coaches, the Suns fired Vogel and appointed Mike Budenholzer as their current head coach.
