Lawlar, ranked as the Diamondbacks’ No. 1 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline, endured a challenging 2024 season marred by injuries. A left hamstring strain and thumb injury limited the 21-year-old shortstop to just 14 games with the Amarillo Sod Poodles, Arizona’s Double-A affiliate. Despite the setback, Lawlar impressed during his brief stint, hitting .315 with a .397 on-base percentage (OBP) and a .500 slugging percentage (SLG).
Over 105 games in 2023, he compiled a .278 batting average with 20 home runs, 23 doubles, and an impressive 36 stolen bases in 41 opportunities. This performance earned him a call-up to the Diamondbacks’ Major League roster, where he made his debut and even played during the World Series.
Drafted 6th overall in the 2021 MLB Draft, the Diamondbacks invested around $7 million in Lawlar. While injuries have hindered his progress, the young phenom continues to show flashes of the talent that made him a top pick.
