When Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo announced Jose Herrera as the starting catcher for Saturday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers, fans took to social media to express their frustration. They had hoped to see Gabriel Moreno behind the plate—a fan favorite who recently returned from the injured list and has made an immediate impact, recording at least one hit in each of his four starts since coming back.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! With Moreno back in the lineup, the Diamondbacks appeared to have snapped out of their September slump and entered Saturday’s game riding a three-game winning streak. His presence on both offense and defense has been pivotal, and fans felt that starting Herrera, who is hitting just .225 this season, was a step back for a team fighting for a playoff spot.
The decision sparked a rush of comments on X, formerly known as Twitter, where fans voiced their anger. One fan sarcastically suggested, “Torey Lovullo hates offense,” a sentiment shared by many who questioned the lineup choice. The Diamondbacks’ social media team was quick to respond, firing back with, “Of course Torey, manager of the highest scoring team in baseball, hates offense. Makes total sense,” pointing to Arizona’s league-leading 849 runs, far ahead of the second-place Dodgers with 794. The Diamondbacks also rank second in hits, fifth in home runs, and second in slugging percentage

Ironically, extending Arizona’s lead to 3-0 in the 5th inning, Jose Herrera backed up Lovullo’s decision to put him in the starting lineup by hitting his first career home run. The home run, coming in his 127th game in the majors, could not have been timed better
