In the latest NFL offseason power rankings by Frank Schwab of Yahoo Sports, the Arizona Cardinals find themselves ranked 25th. While this position might not seem flattering, it is a fair reflection of a team that showed glimpses of potential amidst a challenging 2023 season.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Schwab noted that despite their 4-13 record, the Cardinals had some impressive wins, including victories over the Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Philadelphia Eagles, all playoff-bound teams. These wins demonstrated that the Cardinals were not far from competing with the league’s best, even if their overall record suggested otherwise.
Building off those key wins, the Cardinals have had a quiet but successful offseason. Running backs Trey Benson and DeeJay Dallas, wide receivers Marvin Harrison Jr. and Zay Jones, and cornerbacks Sean Murphy-Bunting and Max Melton were all brought in, giving head coach Jonathan Gannon more to work with during his second year with the team.
Schwab particularly focused on the Cardinals’ new wide receiver threat, Marvin Harrison Jr., stating, “The best news might end up being that none of those wins cost the Cardinals a shot at Marvin Harrison Jr. The Cardinals fell to the fourth overall pick, but they got lucky the first three teams in the draft all needed a quarterback. That allowed the Cardinals, who are already paying Murray big money, to pick arguably the best player in the draft regardless of position. Harrison was a dominant force at Ohio State and one of the best college receivers in many years. He’s the rare receiver who could end up defining a franchise for a decade.”
Head coach Jonathan Gannon recently reflected on his inaugural year in Arizona, telling Mateo Arenas at Cronkite News, “I think that we’ve learned a lot, myself and the staff, and hopefully that makes us a better team. That’s what it comes down to, winning and losing, right? I want to make sure our process is right, we are doing everything we can from a development standpoint for the players so they can have success.”
As the Cardinals prepare for training camp, which opens on July 23, there is a renewed sense of optimism within the organization. The offseason has been marked by stability and a lack of drama, allowing the team to focus on building chemistry and improving on both sides of the ball. In contrast to previous years, under past head coaches, the offseasons were often filled with unnecessary drama and poor front office decisions.
