Diamondbacks recall Humberto Castellanos, option Scott McGough to Triple-A Reno

The Diamondbacks have made a roster move ahead of the series against the Oakland Athletics. Right-hander Humberto Castellanos has been recalled from Triple-A Reno. To make room for him on the roster, they’ve optioned right-hander Scott McGough to Triple-A.

This move comes as no surprise, as the Diamondbacks bullpen took on a heavy workload in the final two games of the series, needing to cover 12 innings thanks to a pair of disaster starts from Ryne Nelson and Jordan Montgomery. McGough pitched in both games, throwing a total of 57 pitches. He needed 44 pitches to get through 1 1/3 innings on Wednesday and would be down for the series. Additionally right-hander Thyago Vieira might not be available outside of a short appearance after throwing 37 pitches on Wednesday night.

Castellanos had one appearance with the Diamondbacks in 2024 after working his way back from 2022 Tommy John surgery. He pitched on June 8 in San Diego, allowing five runs in the eighth inning in a long relief appearance. Once again, he’ll be asked to eat up innings for the bullpen that will not have Bryce Jarvis available after going three innings.

The extra coverage will help with right-hander Slade Cecconi on the mound Friday. The Diamondbacks have been quick to clip Cecconi in his outings, especially once he gets into the 70-80 pitch mark. In case of a short start, Castellanos can give him 2-3 innings out of the bullpen either as a bridge arm or mop-up duty.

Castellanos may be up for only one day, depending on the status of Zac Gallen and his impending return. Gallen is on track to return Saturday, assuming his Thursday bullpen went well.
