Corbin Carroll has “left side discomfort”, will get MRI Monday

Corbin Carroll is congratulated by manager Torey Lovullo after scoring a run against the Chicago White Sox.

Diamondbacks center fielder Corbin Carroll left the Diamondbacks’ 12-5 win the Chicago White Sox in the seventh inning. Carroll made a spectacular play to close on a sinking liner from Danny Mendick, then attempted to double off Lenyn Sosa from first. After the throw, he grabbed his left side. After the game, manager Torey Lovullo said he had left side discomfort.

The plan is for Carroll to stay in Arizona on Monday while the team flies to Washington and get further evaluated by the team doctors. He’ll undergo an MRI on the injured left side. Lovullo pushed back when asked if it was an oblique injury, indicating the issue is more in the rib cage.

“The postgame evaluation was much more positive than I thought based on what I was watching him do in center field, to come in and give us a little snapshot of how he was feeling,” said Lovullo on the Diamondbacks postgame television broadcast. “So the postgame evaluation was pushed in the right direction, but I think it’s fairly routine for us to leave guys behind, get them evaluated when we have that day off. I’m concerned when the athlete comes off, but I’m going to remain optimistic.”

After the play, Jake McCarthy saw that Carroll grabbed his left side and asked what happened. That was the final piece of information that Lovullo needed to take his star outfielder out of the game after the inning. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. pinch hit for Carroll in the bottom half of the seventh, then took over in left with McCarthy moving to center.

Any sort of absence could be problematic for the Diamondbacks. Carroll has reached base in his last 17 games, hitting .290 with a .397 on-base percentage. Alek Thomas is still a week away from returning from his own injury and Jorge Barrosa was placed on the minor league injured list on June 11.
