Throughout 2024, women’s basketball has transcended to new heights. The WNBA specifically has seen a major uptick in viewership, media attention, and viewership — and it seems as if women’s basketball is finally getting the respect it deserves.

Part of the recent women’s basketball boom can be attributed to the evolution of talent. Players are starting to become more dynamic on both ends of the floor, but the truth is, it’s been like that throughout the course of WNBA history.

Players, teams, and coaches continue to advance on a year-by-year basis. That’s a common evolution in any sport, or in any way of life. Players and coaches are starting to learn more based on experience, and changes in the game are made progressively.

The extra talk about women’s basketball is specifically focused around the WNBA, and women’s basketball in America as a whole. However, the game has also continued to evolve globally.

“It’s been amazing to see,” said Diana Taurasi regarding the growth of women’s basketball on a global scale. “The Olympics, FIBA [World Cup], Euroleague, WNBA, they all play off each other. It’s been great to see, I’ve experienced every inch of it. I’m really thankful that I’ve gotten to play everywhere in this world. You see players come here, obviously Americans go abroad all the time. So that synergy of basketball, you can feel it across the world right now.”

Taurasi is getting set for her sixth run in the Olympics, on top of having an extensive playing career overseas. Across both men’s and women’s basketball, there aren’t many players, if any, with as long of a resume as Taurasi. She sees the growth, and realizes that there isn’t a country that Team USA will have an easy time against.

Brittney Griner, a now three-time Olympian, discussed the evolution within the style of women’s basketball overseas.

“You see other countries getting better,” said Brittney Griner. “The competition is just growing each year. There was a couple [countries] where you just knew these were going to be tough games. But now, it’s just kind of across the board. The style, the play, it’s just growing. Women’s basketball is on the up, and I love to see it. I’m glad [that] I’m able to be apart of it, too.”
