Diamondbacks option left-hander Joe Jacques to Reno

Joe Jacques pitches for the Boston Red Sox.

The Diamondbacks announced a roster move with the bullpen before Friday’s game against the San Diego Padres. Right-hander Thyago Vieira has reported to the team and has been added to the roster. To make room for him on the active roster, left-hander Joe Jacques has been optioned to Triple-A Reno.

Vieira, 31, was claimed by the Diamondbacks off waivers on Thursday as part of a series of moves to shake up the bullpen. The hard-throwing right-hander is now on his third team in the 2024 season, with previous stops with the Milwaukee Brewers and Baltimore Orioles. Averaging 97 MPH on two different fastballs, he has premium velocity but the results have not been good with a career 6.71 ERA. As an out of options player, the Diamondbacks cannot take him off the active roster without designating him for assignment first.

Jacques was another waiver claim earlier in the season, from the Boston Red Sox. The sidearming lefty was in the bullpen on Thursday but did not pitch. On an optional assignment, he is ineligible to be recalled to the major league roster until June 22 unless to replace an injured player.

Arizona’s bullpen is in somewhat better shape, but with a starting rotation that’s been crushed with injuries and short starts it’s having an effect on the bullpen and forcing difficult roster decisions.
